Our Story
Alexandra Young was a college student at the University of South Carolina when her sorority took part in a leadership academy program. One of the activities was ‘Dream Big,’ asking participants about their future dreams. Alex wrote in her journal that she wanted to start a camp just like [the sorority’s leadership academy in Minnesota. After graduation and a year as a leadership consultant for collegiate women, Alex returned to the Twin Cities to attend law school at the University of St. Thomas.
About halfway through law school, Alex realized she didn’t want a traditional lawyer career. While cleaning her house one day, she stumbled upon the old journal from college with her note about dreams—and the rest is history. During her 3L year at UST, she attended a class on nonprofit law and got the new organization up and running. By the time she graduated from St. Thomas, the Center for Girls’ Leadership was born.
Since our founding in 2011, the CGL has designed our own unique curriculum and focused on bringing the value of our Real Girls, Real Leadership program and Steps to Success series programs to empower over 250 middle and high school girls in the Twin Cities area.
